Fish We Catch

The most popular fish Riley’s Guide Service trips pursue are Steelhead and Salmon located on the Rogue River. The best times of year to find these fish are Winter steelhead: Jan-April, Spring Salmon: May-Aug, Fall Salmon: July-October, Summer Steelhead/Coho Salmon: October-December.

In the summer months (June – August), The Umpqua River is well known for its abundance of Smallmouth Bass. Largemouth Bass can be found (May – June) in various rivers and lakes throughout Oregon as well. See more information below…

Steelhead Trout

Steelhead occupy freshwater streams or lakes during spawning and then migrate back through brackish water to the open ocean to live during their adult non-spawning phase of their life cycle. Steelhead spend most of the year in estuaries or open ocean and only return to fresh water to spawn.

Chinook Salmon

Chinook salmon are an anadromous species that spend their adult life in salt water and then migrate into their freshwater natal streams to spawn. During their adult life history stage, Chinook feed on squid and fish. In the juvenile stages, Chinook feed on terrestrial insects and small crustaceans.

Rainbow Trout

Freshwater rainbow trout inhabit & spawn in small to moderately large, well oxygenated, shallow rivers with gravel bottoms. Lake resident rainbow trout are usually found in moderately deep, cool lakes with vegetation to support production of sufficient food sources. Lake populations require access to gravelly bottomed streams to be self-sustaining.

Coho Salmon

Coho salmon are an anadromous species that primarily spend their adult life in salt water & then migrate into freshwater to spawn. Young Coho Salmon which inhabit lakes & rivers eat mainly insects. When migrating to the sea, the young salmon dine on planktonic crustaceans. As they grow & move further out to sea, they begin to hunt larger forage species like fish, squid & jellyfish.

Smallmouth Bass

Adult smallmouth bass live in shallow rocky areas of lakes and in the clear and gravel bottom runs and flowing pools of rivers. They also live in cool flowing streams and reservoirs fed by these types of streams. Adults may feed on crayfish, fish and aquatic and terrestrial insects. This fish is also known to be cannibalistic.

Largemouth Bass

Steelhead occupy freshwater streams or lakes during spawning and then migrate back through brackish water to the open ocean to live during their adult non-spawning phase of their life cycle. Steelhead spend most of the year in estuaries or open ocean and only return to fresh water to spawn.
